Wells & Co expands its French estate with new Strasbourg pub

This month, independent brewery and retailing business Wells & Co added a new pub to its French estate, The Queen Elizabeth, marking its first venue in the city of Strasbourg. This further expansion comes on the back of acquiring two additional pubs in Bordeaux at the end of last year.

Wells & Co currently has an estate of 165 pubs in the UK and now has 19 in France, in cities including Paris, Lille, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Lyon, Montpellier, Reims and La Rochelle. The business is known for bringing its lively English pubs overseas for locals and tourists to enjoy, and its pubs have become firm favourites across the channel.

Formally named ‘Le Comptoir D’Eugéne’, the newly acquired pub reopened on Thursday 6th June with a new name, The Queen Elizabeth. Situated in Strasbourg, 4km west of the Rhine River on the Franco-German border, the pub honours its traditional British roots with a range of great quality English craft beers on offer, including fan favourites Foghorn and Genesis from Wells & Co’s state-of-the-art Bedford brewery, Brewpoint. The pub also plays host to weekly events and live music, creating a welcoming and fun atmosphere for visitors.

Wells & Co’s COO, Shirley Couchman, said: “We’re thrilled to have opened The Queen Elizabeth and be expanding to a new French city, with Strasbourg making an exciting addition to our French Estate. We look forward to giving visitors the true English pub experience, through traditional English-themed décor and our range of fantastic quality beers. This new addition to our group of French pubs will ensure customers have an unforgettable experience, and we look forward to seeing its success in the coming months.”

Wells and Co. has been bringing communities together in France since 1995, having built up a presence across eight French cities. The success of these operations in France will give the pub group more opportunity to expand and unite pints, pubs and people across the nation.

Wells & Co. note to the editors:

Wells & Co. was founded in 1876 and is an independent, fifth generation, family-owned business with an estate of 165 pubs in the UK and 19 in France. In 2020, Wells & Co opened Brewpoint on Cut Throat Lane, Bedford. Much more than just a state-of-the-art brewery facility, Brewpoint is a significant investment into the long-standing business’ future with a shop, office, pub and EV chargers. A statement of intent built on five generations of craft beer.
