What is the one thing you'd like to tell visitors to the Guild's website?
I have been writing about beer from the consumer perspective for over 40 years, following brewing’s counter-revolution from its shaky start in the 1970s to its many global successes. The World Atlas of Beer (3rd edition published on 1 October 2020 in the UK by Octopus; US and Spanish editions to follow in 2021), which I co-author with Stephen Beaumont, manages to pack much of that story into 270 pages and has been translated into 10 languages to date. Before the Atlas, my Good Beer Guide Belgium earned respect for its unique in-depth coverage and some notoriety for refusing to pour praise on the mundane.
What you can offer as a writer/beer lover?
Been there, done that, got the perspective. I offer a completely independent, genuinely global, intelligent, knowledgeable and highly experienced take on the future, present state and real history of beer and brewing, unharmed by marketing glitter. I can write or speak with some authority about what is really going on in the beer scene nationally and internationally, covering topics from beer styling, superficial versus underlying trends, consumer preferences, and the macro-economics of the sector. With the right offer I am available for consulting, key-note addresses and serious beer events.
What do you like most about being a Guild of Beer Writers member?
The independent brewing sector is one of the nicest businesses on earth. The Guild is a broad church but among our congregation are many of the people responsible for UK brewing starting its long, slow, incomplete trudge back to brewing greatness.
