This Easter weekend Leeds is HopCity! And there’s no Easter Bunny in sight

From 13th to 15th April, Leeds’ Northern Monk Brew Co. welcomes some of the greatest and most cutting-edge breweries for a celebration of hops. HopCity is sponsored by US hop growing collective Yakima Chief, and is produced in association with Leeds Beer Week and Little Leeds Beer House.

Beer lovers across the UK salivate at the prospect of UK debuts from the likes of US breweries THE ALCHEMIST (Vermont), brewer of the world, beating Heady Topper and OTHER HALF (New York) – two unashamedly hop-forward breweries who have achieved legendary status among beer fans across the globe by pushing the envelope of what beer can be. Added to this is the fact that these breweries rarely visit Europe, let alone the UK – HopCity will be one of the only places to try their utterly delicious beverages.

A strong Scandinavian contingent will also be attending, including crowd pleasers Dry and Bitter and more debuts from Stigbergets (producers of one of the top 10 IPAs in the world), o/o and Alefarm. This stellar line-up is backed up by the likes of Manchester’s Cloudwater brewery (fresh from receiving the accolade of 5th best brewery in the world), local legends Magic Rock and big-time UK breweries Beavertown, The Kernel, Siren, Brewdog and Marble, plus several more on-trend UK breweries and a local contingent curated by Leeds Beer Week. Full details are available at HopCity.co.uk and @HopCityLeeds twitter and instagram accounts.

The festival aims to be the first European festival to focus solely on hops and hop-led beer styles. IPAs feature heavily, of course – think Session IPAs, Double IPAs, Black IPAs, Belgian IPAs and some more left field examples like dry hopped sours, hoppy dark beers and other delights. In particular, people will be gunning for the Hop City official beer! Produced in collaboration with Cloudwater brewery, this limited edition IPA showcases some of the best hops available and has been produced especially for the festival, launching very soon in cans with peel to reveal labels, 5 of which will contain GOLDEN TICKETS to the festival.  Add to that street food provided by Patty Smiths, Holy Crab, Parmstar, Manjits Kitchen and Dim Sum Su – and there’s a tonne to get your teeth into.

Tickets are priced at £12+ booking fee for single sessions from Thursday through to Saturday. A ‘Full Cone’ ticket gives access to all sessions and is priced at £60+ booking fee.

Notes for editors…

Northern Monk Brew Co. launched from a Grade II-listed mill building in late 2014, which houses their tap room and brewery on the outskirts of Leeds city centre. Embracing their raison d’être; “For the past. For the present. For the future” they focus on historically British styles, re-imagining them using the latest in ingredients and brewing techniques. A style that embodies this and features in many guises in the brew schedule are India Pale Ales. Originating from England over 200 years ago, the style has evolved and now has many interpretations. Their Eternal session IPA was the first India Pale Ale brewed in England to receive a medal at the World Beer Cup.

Northern Monk have recently acquired a second site, housing state-of-the-art brewing equipment and quadrupling their current capacity. This move will allow the original site to be the home of R&D and innovation and help the brewery to meet the global demand for their beer.
