Charles Wells France take on Europe’s Football Fans and score massive increase in sales during 2016 European Championships

Charles Wells France has seen a massive increase in sales thanks to the European football Championships held in the country over June and July this year. For the four week period (10 June-10July) the 13 pubs across France took a total of €1,545,574 – a 175% increase from the same period in 2015.

For the tournament period, managers at Charles Wells pubs across France reported:

  • Overall sales value: €1,545,574 – a 175% increase from the same period in 2015.
  • Plastic cups used: 136,800
  • Pints sold during the tournament: 225,595

While the overall stats are impressive enough, and indicative of how international tournaments being held locally can drive pub sales and profits, some individual pubs stand out. In particular the Charles Dickens in Bordeaux became an unofficial base for Welsh fans after BBC Wales decided to broadcast from there every time their national side played nearby.

Craig Mayes, Director Charles Wells France, says while the atmosphere at all the pubs was electric, the Charles Dickens in Bordeaux certainly stood out: “BBC Wales set up their broadcast base at the Charles Dickens, during nearby matches, attracting thousands of Welsh fans who brought along an infectious party atmosphere with them. As their national side got further and further into the tournament the Charles Dickens became the place to be during the tournament, with many fans becoming honorary regulars getting to know the bar staff by name as they enjoyed great food and beer.”

Speaking about the sheer scale of keeping the beer flowing during a tournament like this, Craig added that all the staff at Charles Wells France stepped up to the challenge: “We’ve a brilliant team running our Charles Wells France pubs and they met the challenge of serving thousands of thirsty and hungry visiting football fans head on. From making sure we had enough stock, to covering extra shifts when needed, the chefs, servers, bar staff and managers all worked brilliantly and proved why Charles Wells’ pubs in France are so popular.”

Charles Wells France has 13 pubs across five cities and is currently recruiting for French Speaking Promotion & Communications Manager to be based France. Anyone who is interested should contact Craig at
